Aloha!

From our Ohana to yours, we share the Aloha spirit by bringing the Central Coast and Bay Area the sweet taste of shave ice from the islands of Hawaii. Our name, “Moku”, is derived from the Hawaiian word for “island”, mokupuni. Aloha symbolizes love, peace, compassion, and a mutual understanding of respect. It is to live in harmony with the people and land. Aloha is truly an essence of being.

History of Shave Ice

Japanese immigrants, who came to the Hawaiian Islands to work in the sugar and pineapple fields over 200 years ago, introduced kakigori (shave ice). The Japanese immigrants in Hawaii used their tools to shave flakes off large blocks of ice and add sugar or fruit juice to stay cool. In Pidgin vernacular, the refreshing treat became known as shave ice (no ‘d’) not shaved ice.
